Soils

Today the topic we will discuss is soil! Such as an important factor for plants. people and for the world.

The soil of Amazon rainforest is the deepest in the world,  it have been formed from the underlying rock and rain. Some places of the Amazon River Basin, the soil is white and sandy. How is a rainforest, the rain has a lot of impact there, the soils are often washed out, so large amounts of nutrients and minerals are being removed from the subsoil, due to it, most of the soils are lacking many of the fundamental nutrients needed by the above ground vegetation. Composed by a thin topsoil, made up mainly of decaying vegetable and animals, what provide a high amount of organic matter.

The soil for guarana normally is a ground soil, well drained (guarana does not accept soggy soils), well-irrigated and porous. The soil also need to be rich in organic matter but can be chemically poor and the pH should be between 4.5 and 5.

The deforestation that is happening at the rainforest has a lot of impact also in the soil, this action disturbs the natural soil-plant cycle and makes the soils extremely vulnerable to soil erosion and loss of this vital topsoil.
The topsoil has huge amounts of carbon, and it has influence on the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and for the global warming. If the top soil is gone there are no roots to hold the soil in place during heavy tropical rains. The rains wash away the topsoil and the nutrients necessary to regenerate future vegetation. Together with the deforestation it can be a dangerous combination for the plants and for the soil. The deforestation is the main cause of erosion on worldwide!
Below a photo of an area of the Amazon rainforest that was deforested.
Clear-cutting and logging large swaths of rain forest greatly increase soil erosion.

So how to reduce erosion? The answer is simple and direct: stop deforestation in the Amazon rainforest before is too late. The areas where is already deforested, reforestation of those areas with native species is the solution.
